Amtrak NEWS was a bi-monthly newsletter published for Amtrak employees. Feature articles in this issue focus on the inauguration of the Pioneer (Salt Lake City-Boise-Seattle) and Hilltopper (Washington-Roanoake-Catlettsburg), as well as the start of a new electrician apprenticeship program at the Beech Grove Shops.

Amtrak introduced improved Self ServeTicketing kiosks in early 1987 at heavily-trafficked stations such as Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles. Customers could buy a ticket or retrieve one for a previously made reservation.

Viewliners, manufactured by Amerail and introduced in 1996, are primarily used on routes in the East and Midwest where tunnel and bridge clearances preclude the use of Superliners.
